Network Topologies

A network topology describes how devices and connections are arranged in a network.

Memory Hooks

Three-Tier Network Model

Collapsed Core

A Collapsed Core combines the Core and Distribution functions into one layer.

Why use it?Can reduce cost, complexity, and latency.
Where?Common in small and medium-sized businesses.
Main trade-off?Combining functions can create congestion.
Upgrade challengeChanges can affect both core and distribution functions.

North-South vs. East-West Traffic

Switch vs. Router

SwitchRouter
Primarily connects devices within a LAN.Connects different networks.
Uses MAC addresses for Layer 2 forwarding.Uses IP addresses and routing tables for Layer 3 forwarding.

Remember: Routing between different networks is a router function, not a primary switch function.
